Lukumades: Taking “Greek Donuts” to Another Level

This establishment in the center of Athens is the ultimate place to try Greece's all-time classic dessert.

On the corner of Aiolou and Aghias Irinis Street, you will find LUKUMADES, a shop that reinvented the beloved Greek dessert from which it takes its name (loukoumades which are fried balls of dough, aka “Greek donuts” ), becoming an instant favorite among locals and visitors alike.

The common philosophy of the team at LUKUMADES is their love for authentic products. Loukoumades are considered among the oldest pastries in the world, thought to have been consumed at the ancient Olympic Games.

The recipe LUKUMADES uses to make its fluffy creations is simple, traditional and, above all, perfectly executed. They remain true to the all-time classic dessert while also producing tweaked modern versions, featuring a large variety of toppings and fillings to suit all tastes.

LUKUMADES’ dough is prepared on demand and each portion is fried to order, ensuring every serving is as fresh as can be.

Apart from the traditional loukoumades served with honey and cinnamon, other options include different flavors and combinations (with toppings like praline, strawberry chocolate, white chocolate, bitter chocolate, peanut butter and pistachio praline) all with the option of gelato on the side.

But the ultimate “must-order” are the signature filled loukoumades, which are injected with creams with different flavors such as bougatsa (custard pie), praline, mastic and banana and lemon.

Not much of a sweet tooth? Then go for savory versions filled with different Greek cheeses and other local delicacies.

And if you just need to cool down in the summer heat you can also grab a serving of plain gelato, soft serve ice cream or even a milkshake.

A large selection of coffees (freddo espresso, freddo cappuccino, frappe), organic teas, and freshly-squeezed lemonade are also available to accompany your delicious loukoumades.
