Athens Democracy Forum Marked with Special Issue

The annual Athens Democracy Forum takes place next week, and is being celebrated with a special print edition of Greece Is.

The fourth annual Athens Democracy Forum is set to take place on September 14-18, 2016 in time for International Day of Democracy on September 15. For the second year running, Greece Is will be releasing a special edition issue dedicated to the theme of democracy. The issue features an eclectic mix essays and opinion articles by distinguished scholars, including Mary Beard, Josiah Ober, John Camp, Peter Jones, Brad Evans and Zygmunt Bauman, Erica Chenoweth and many others, and will be in circulation as of Sunday September 11th.

Hosted and moderated by New York Times editors along with Kathimerini, and presented under the auspices of the President of the Hellenic Republic Prokopios Pavlopoulos, the Athens Democracy Forum will bring together politicians, policy makers, journalists, scholars and experts from the fields of business, finance and technology to explore the challenges to liberal democracy and ways to face them.

The forum has traditionally chosen the Greek capital as its home in homage to Greece being the birthplace of democracy. Key themes at this year’s event include: Is democracy good for business? Is liberal democracy compatible with religion? Should the major institutions of global governance be reformed, or scrapped? Do terrorist attacks justify giving greater powers to security forces?

Speakers include New York Times columnist Paul Krugman, CNN chief anchor Christiane Amanpour, Kenneth Roth, executive director of Human Right’s Watch, former minister of finance Yanis Varoufakis, Edward Snowden and many more.

Apart from in-depth debates, participants will also be treated to tours of the city’s highlights, with the forum culminating in a weekend of discussions at the Costa Navarino resort. To register, see the full list of speakers and the full agenda, visit the Athens Democracy Forum website.
