Sports Meets Nature in Lesvos

The LESVOSTRAIL 2016 event invites runners and walkers to enjoy the unique beauty of the island

The LESVOSTRAIL 2016, a unique event which combines the natural beauty of Lesvos with an opportunity for individual athletic achievement, is open for registration until September 30, 2016.

The event has been organized by the Local Lesvos Government Administration (ETAL), the Municipality of Lesvos, the Union of Sports Associations of Lesvos, the Chamber of Lesvos and the Molyvos Tourism Association.

On October 9, 2016, participants will set off down one of four routes suitable for various ability levels; runners and walkers alike will make their way through the island’s olive groves, down its nature trails and along its beautiful coastline.

• LESVOSTRAIL 37km, a long-distance event beginning in Molyvos. Participation costs €35

• LESVOSRUNNING 4km, a run through Molyvos. Participation costs €5

• LESVOSWALK 4km, a brisk walk through Molyvos. Participation is free of charge.

• LESVOSkids 600m, an event suitable for children and a great way to boost their love of nature. Participation is free of charge.

• LESVOSTRAIL 2016 falls under the umbrella of the “Fit on Olive Trails” network, which has also organized three other similar events taking place from spring to autumn in Italy, Slovenia and Malta. All of these countries, like Greece, are home to extensive olive groves and have a strong olive-growing culture.

Participants in the 37km event will tackle a mostly off-road course. “It’s not on the public streets, but through the mountains,” explains Tasos Perimenis, head of ETAL. “The strategic objective for us is to promote the identity and character of the island; our ongoing goal is the presentation of the real Lesvos. From a height of 900 meters, you can see the entire island as if from an airplane,” he says.

With over 10 million trees, the island of Lesvos is one of the richest ecosystems in the Mediterranean. An extensive network of marked hiking trails will guide runners past archaeological sites, across beaches and mountains and through volcanic landscapes, olive groves and forests of pine and chestnut trees.

Special maps and other accessories will be distributed at the starting line of each route, and there will be volunteers, medical assistance and snacks and drinks available at each station along the way to help participants as they complete the routes of their choice.
