Storm Warning Issued for Mainland Greece Wednesday Afternoon

More intense rain, thunder and hail is expected to hit Athens and other areas of the mainland for a second day today.

The National Observatory’s Meteo weather service has issued a storm warning for Wednesday afternoon, saying that torrential rain and hail is expected across mainland Greece and possibly in parts of the northern and eastern Aegean as well.

Residents and visitors are advised to avoid unnecessary exposure during the worst of the stormy weather, as the strong gusts are expected to reach gale force in some areas.

Tuesday’s downpours caused traffic jams and other problems in the capital, and farmers reported ruined crops around the country. In Korinthia, a man passed away after being hit by lightning.

While the beginning of summer is also characterised by sunny and nice weather, Greece gets hit by more lightning bolts in June than during any other month of the year. The storms usually pass quickly, but caution is generally recommended while they last.
