Athens Open Air Film Festival: The Fest Has Begun

Athens' annual cinematic extravaganza runs from June 14 to August 20, showcasing an eclectic mix of films at open air venues throughout the city.

The Athens Open Air Film Festival (AOAFF) is a summertime tradition for Athenians.

On Monday, June 14, the hugely popular film festival returned to Athens’ open air cinemas, archeological sites, museums, landmarks, and drive-in spaces for its 11th edition.

With all the necessary safety and social distancing measures in place, the AOAFF has organized 14 screenings, including films from all over the world. The films of Wong Kar Wai, Emir Kusturica, and Claude Chabrol will be screened alongside the filmography of Alfred Hitchcock, Spike Lee, and the Coen brothers.

The festival premiered with Thomas Vinterberg’s Oscar-winning 2020 film, Another Round (Danish: Druk “Binge Drinking”), starring Mads Mikkelsen, and will close with Alan J. Pakula’s 1971 neo-noir crime thriller Klute, starring Jane Fonda and Donald Sutherland, on August 20.

Entrance is free with registered tickets, which spectators can book online at aoaff.gr, three days before each each screening.
