The Athens Riviera: One of Forbes’ Top Destinations for 2025

Just minutes from the capital, the Athens Riviera is emerging as Europe’s next top destination, a dazzling blend of luxury, natural beauty and history along a stunning coastal stretch.

We’ve all heard of the sparkling shores of Mykonos, the postcard-perfect sunsets of Santorini, and the timeless monuments of Athens. But just a short 20-minute drive from the city center lies a stretch of coastline that is quietly becoming one of Europe’s most exciting seaside destinations. It’s no surprise then, that Forbes Travel Guide recognized the Athens Riviera as one of the Top 12 Destinations to Visit in 2025, calling it “The next Greek beach haven.”

Stretching from Piraeus to Cape Sounio, this 70km coastal wonder offers something for every taste. Marina Flisvos in Paleo Faliro sets the tone for much of the rest of the coastline with its five-gold-anchor-accredited marina, where yachts from around the world dock alongside waterfront cafés, restaurants and even an open-air cinema. It’s the perfect place to stroll, enjoy a coffee, and smile at the quirky names of some amazing luxury boats.

Further down the coast, Glyfada serves as the Riviera’s commercial and social hub, packed with stylish local boutiques, lively beach bars and scenic seaside walkways. The community of Vouliagmeni offers a more serene yet upscale atmosphere. Here, you’ll find luxury resorts, a brand-new high-end marina and the hidden gem that is Lake Vouliagmeni – a stunning natural thermal lake framed by limestone cliffs and offering therapeutic waters year-round.

Perhaps the most transformative development on the near horizon is The Ellinikon. Rising on the site of the city’s former airport and slated for completion by 2028, it will feature a smart city infrastructure, expansive green spaces, cultural venues and sustainable housing on an unprecedented scale.

And, as if ancient Athens wasn’t enough, the journey along the shore ends at Cape Sounio, home to the Temple of Poseidon, situated dramatically on a seaside cliff – one of the most unforgettable sunset spots in Greece.

Whether you’re in the mood for high-end dining or a traditional taverna by the water, this Riviera delivers. Feel like lounging around at a five-star beach club or just grabbing your towel and diving off a pier into the turquoise waters of Kavouri? The choice is yours. And, with the coastal tram line offering convenient and scenic rides from the city center to the sea, getting there could not be easier.

The Riviera dazzles not just by day but after dark too, with summer nightlife spots to rival any Greek island. Beach clubs, cocktail bars and seaside lounges all come alive after sunset, adding yet more allure to what is an expansive all-season escape destination, a place where lively urban vibes are complemented by soothing seaside serenity.
