Free Christmas Screenings at Athens Pop-Up Cinemas

Need some help getting into Christmas mood? Catch one of these movies at outdoor theaters now.

As part of the City of Athens’ Christmas program of events, seven open-air cinemas have been set up in cooperation with the Athens Open Air Film Festival, and are screening Christmas movies (and movies with particular holiday feel) for free around the city. The pop-up cinemas can be found at the lower end of Ermou street in Thiseio, at the Kolonos Theater, at the Municipal Market of Kypseli, at Mesologgiou Square in Pagrati, at the Ambelokipi basketball court, at the Gravas Theater and at Zappeio). If you haven’t caught a movie yet, here are the films that will be screened tonight, through December 30th.

Beware that all screenings are free, but preregistration is necessary via forms available only in Greek (find them through the links below).

Die Hard

December 23, 19:00

Some say it’s not a real Christmas movie, others believe it to be the best one of all time. Regardless, watching John McClane blow up an elevator shaft and crawl around air ducts is the perfect antidote to too much sugar – or so we believe. The first film of the franchise starring Bruce Willis, from 1988, will be screened at the Kolonos Theater.

Lady and the Tramp

December 28, 19:00

The classic romantic Disney flick from 1955 is probably the sweetest movie you can watch with your kids during the holidays, and if you were too busy running around during actual Christmas, hearing Tony and Joe sing Bella Notte during the famous spaghetti scene will do the trick. Catch it at the Ambelokipi basketball court.

Beetlejuice

December 29, 19:00

Another masterpiece from 1988, Tim Burton’s fantastic comedy starring Alec Baldwin, Geena Davies, Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder has all that’s missing from comedies today: crazy makeup and ghosts. Watch it at the Gravas Theater for a welcome dose of nostalgia.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

December 31, 19:00

Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, the first film based on J.K. Rowling’s books about Harry Potter was a smash hit then, and is just as beloved today. A film that appeals both to those who loved it first, and those who wish to bring their children to see it for the first time, the seats at this screening are bound to fill up fast.
