Greece Ranks Second Worldwide with 625 Blue Flag Beaches for 2025

With summer in full swing and the call of the sea growing stronger, Greece welcomes the 2025 season with a remarkable 625 beaches awarded the prestigious Blue Flag, according to the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature (EEPF), which oversees the international “Blue Flag” program in Greece. Once again, the country holds second place among 52 participating nations worldwide.

The Blue Flag is a globally recognized symbol of quality and excellence, awarded annually by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) to beaches, marinas, and sustainable boating tourism operators that meet strict criteria, including crystal-clear waters, effective environmental management, safety, organization, and high-standard visitor services.

 

This year Crete takes the spotlight, setting a new record with 146 beaches receiving Blue Flag status, reaffirming the island’s reputation as a premier destination for sea lovers. Lasithi leads the way with 51 awarded beaches, followed by Heraklion (35), Chania (38), and Rethymno (22). However, the highest number of Blue Flags in any single regional unit in Greece goes to Halkidiki, with an impressive 93 awarded beaches and coastal areas.

Globally, the international committee awarded 4,302 beaches, 736 marinas, and 158 tourism boats with the Blue Flag this year.

In Attica, 17 beaches earned the distinction, including the beaches of Brexiza and Schinias/Karavi in Marathon, Diastavrosi and Limni in Spata-Artemida, Avlaki in Markopoulo, Lagonisi, Mavro Lithari, and the luxurious Astir Beach in Vouliagmeni.

Thessaloniki boasts 13 Blue Flag beaches, including Asprovalta, Nea Vrasna, and Stavros, as well as several along the Thermaikos coastline, such as Agia Triada, Michaniona, Neoi Epivates, and Peraia.
