Skopelos is rapidly gaining recognition from German travel media as one of Greece’s most enchanting hidden destinations, and local authorities are already positioning the island front and center for 2026.
The German entertainment and travel website WMN.de recently highlighted Skopelos as the “most green secret” of Greece, promoting it as the authentic “Mamma Mia island” – full of “positive energy and spectacular nature.” It praises the island’s labyrinthine alleys in picturesque villages, breathtaking hiking routes, pine-shaded beaches with cinematic allure, and a wide range of adventure activities and boat excursions.
Of particular note, WMN.de recommends Skopelos not only during the low season but also in peak summer months, stressing that its charm and service quality remain consistent even under high tourist demand. The article was cited via the Athens–Macedonian News Agency.

Local officials are responding. “Skopelos uniquely combines diverse experiences – from well-hidden natural corners, absolute tranquility, and ancient legends to the glamour of Mamma Mia!, gastronomy, outdoor activities, local traditions, folk art, rebetiko music, and lively entertainment,” says Giorgos Papadavid, municipal tourism councilor. He notes that, seeing growing interest from both domestic and international travelers, the municipality has already launched promotional efforts targeting 2026.
In a strategic move, the Municipality of Skopelos recently participated in a high-profile charity auction in London. The highlight was a guitar belonging to Björn Ulvaeus (of ABBA fame and co-producer of the Mamma Mia! films), which fetched proceeds for Nordoff & Robins, a nonprofit offering music therapy to people with mobility and neurological conditions. The event attracted major British media, artists, and personalities. As part of the auction, Skopelos offered a stay on the island – boosting its visibility among a select international audience and tethering the destination’s identity to ABBA’s musical legacy.
The island itself has long been known for its lush landscapes. Skopelos is the second largest in the Northern Sporades and is covered with dense pine forests (roughly 70 % of its area). Its main town, Hora, is often praised as the most beautiful in the Sporades, preserving its whitewashed, sugar-cubed architecture, narrow alleys, and scenic waterfront.
Visitors can explore natural trails, cycle across gently rolling hills, or enjoy scuba diving trips – the island is home to several notable shipwrecks, including the Christoforos. Beaches like Milia, Velanio, Stafylos, and Kastani offer tranquil swimmers’ havens framed by forested slopes.
