For the second consecutive year, Skopelos has earned a spot among the top “secret” destinations in the Mediterranean, according to an annual survey by Travelbook.de, Germany’s largest online travel magazine under the BILD banner. Ranked fifth among eight select islands from France, Spain, Italy, Croatia, and Greece, Skopelos is celebrated for its authenticity, natural splendor, and escape from mass tourism.
According to Travelbook.de, “…it smells of sage, and numerous beautiful bays and beaches line the coast, for example the long Limnonari Beach with its white sand and turquoise sea. Skopelos also offers numerous outdoor activities, such as hiking, mountain biking, and kayaking. A must-do is the climb to the church of Agios Ioannis sto Kastri, where parts of the ABBA film “Mamma Mia” with Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan were filmed.”
At the same time, the news portal Merkur.de highlights Skopelos as a peaceful and high-quality alternative to Crete and Mykonos. It praises the island’s natural beauty, rich vegetation, crystal-clear waters, secluded coves (once pirate hideouts), excellent diving spots, and impressive historical shipwrecks.
Echoing the same sentiment, the respected German newspaper Augsburger Allgemeine encourages its hundreds of thousands of readers to broaden their travel horizons and discover a “different Greece.” Its feature highlights Skopelos’ stunning beaches, authentic local flavors, charming cobbled streets, centuries-old monasteries, and cultural treasures, including elegant mansions and scenic viewpoints steeped in legend.
This wave of positive coverage follows a targeted press trip organized by the Municipality of Skopelos, which welcomed German journalists eager to spotlight a destination that has remained refreshingly untouched, despite its fame as a Mamma Mia! filming location.
“Skopelos is emerging as a quality attraction for both domestic and international travelers seeking relaxation and rejuvenation. Our dozens of exotic beaches, endless nature-based activities, local production and gastronomy, rich traditions, monasteries, cultural heritage, authentic entertainment, revival of rebetiko music, modern Mamma Mia tours, and villages all offer a variety of experiences that make each visitor’s holiday on the island truly unique and personal,” stated Eva Karamesini, Chair of the Tourism Committee of the Municipality of Skopelos.
