XTERRA Triathlon Returns to the Athenian Riviera

Professional athletes and triathlon first-timers will flock to the beach at Vouliagmeni this weekend, to fight for a “ticket” to Hawaii.

Athletic events draw athletes to numerous Greek destinations throughout the year. This weekend, those based in Athens needn’t pack any bags, as one of the largest gatherings of the year is set to take place at Vouliagmeni beach, on the Athenian Riviera.

Among the most popular athletic events in Greece are the triathlons, attracting swimmers, runners and cyclists, and one of the most famous triathlon challenges, in the country and in the world, is XTERRA, an off-road triathlon consisting of open water swimming, mountain-biking, and trail-running, founded in Hawaii in 1996. The event’s eighth installment in Greece – the fifth taking place on the Athenian Riviera, in the location which hosted the triathlon venue during the Athens 2004 Olympic Games – is promising to be bigger than ever before, featuring a new race (a “cross aquathlon,” combining swimming and running but no cycling), taking place parallel with the main event.

There will also be relays, a sprint distance, and open water swimming races, while winners of the XTERRA Full Distance triathlon will earn spots in the 25th World Championship in Maui on December 5.
