Five Historic Athenian Souvlaki Joints
Souvlaki joints started appearing in earnest...
This place opened two years ago in Bit Bazaar. You will find it as you enter from Olympus street. Look carefully for it, because it’s almost completely concealed by the other shops in the area.
This is the newest, most compact and unassuming shop in the area. The decor is reminiscent of a classic taverna. It’s started becoming popular more recently with the city’s youth community, and even hosted the Mayor of Thessaloniki, Yiannis Boutaris with his entourage. Sometimes I think I’d like the decor to be more refined, but, on the other, this is part of its charm, along with the very friendly staff.
The owners love good produce and experimentation in the kitchen, something that was missing from the area. Their fried clams are delicious. Their mushrooms, stuffed with four cheeses and beetroot sauce, have an especially delicate taste.
As for appetizers, the fried mushroom with garlic and basil, as well as the cheese croquettes with cucumber tagliatelle also stood out. Among their salads, the namesake of the establishment constitutes a meal in itself, with chicken fillets and a lemon dressing, and among cheeses, the breaded Tripia Potiria cheese with caramelized beetroot is not to be missed.
One of the house specialties; mushrooms, stuffed with four cheeses and beetroot sauce.
The beef liver and chicken were very good, finished with beer, mustard and nigella seeds. The meats and cheeses come from local suppliers ‒ it turns out that the liver comes from my own butcher who I trust blindly. Don’t be afraid to try the carefully selected mussels when in season.
The bill comes to 15 euros per person for a very hearty meal.
Mainly spirits are on offer, such as raki and rakomelo. There are also cocktails, some basic drinks, juices, soft drinks and good beers. Wines come from bulk cases, white, red, dry, and semi-sweet.
Open from noon. If you contact the owner up to two days in advance, a menu of your choice can be created or a larger table arranged for you and your friends for any occasion.
