What to Eat in Pilio

A buffet of local flavors await in the villages of the verdant Pilio peninsula. Here's our guide to the best places to dine.

Portaria

It’s uniquely atmospheric from floor to ceiling and unlike any other restaurant in the area. The dining area of Gefsokratoras in Portaria features elements from its previous existence as a grocery store, and boasts an authentic fresco by the naive Greek artist Theofilos. The owners Sylvi and Antonis Tsolakoudis have added their personal mark by marrying classic culinary elements with the rustic feel of the restaurant. Mediterranean and other European dishes, cooked with Greek products and French techniques, pair well with their remarkable wine list to compose a very elegant dinner.

In the village square with the big plane tree in Portaria stands Kritsa, the gastronomic treasure of this mountain community. The Karaiskou family that manages the guesthouse bearing their name also operates the restaurant, using the fruit, vegetables and milk from its own farm in the kitchen there. Among their signature dishes are the wild boar stew prepared in a traditional clay pot, and the spetzofai, or sausages and peppers in a tomato sauce. Make sure to try the savory pies with their hand-rolled fyllo.

After the meal, stop by Myrro to pick up Greek herbs, aromatic teas and attractive tea services and accessories.

Niochori

Far from the more touristic villages of the area, this taverna is a destination for simple food, especially grilled meats. Giannis O Germanos in Niochori serves delicious chops, a number of items made from buffalo meat, and tasty tidbits cooked on the spit, especially on weekends. There are a few bottled wine options, mainly from local wineries.

Zagora

In Zagora, in the taverna Meidani, diners enjoy grilled cuts of meat and whatever Ms Niki has been cooking in the large pots on the stove. The food is homemade and the friendly service is genuine.

Makrinitsa

Follow the cobbled path from Makrinitsa Square and very soon you will find yourself at Kardamos, whose balcony overlooks the whole of Pelion. If the weather won’t let you enjoy the outdoor dining, don’t worry; the fireplace inside will keep you warm as you enjoy the select meat dishes and local homemade pasta options on offer.

Tsagarada

In Tsagarada, Anapodo Platani, the village wine bar, is a place that we would make our hangout if it was located in our city. There’s good wine and food served by a smiling hostess in a place full of heart and discerning taste.
