The Vouraikos Gorge, Lake Tsivlou, the Cave of the Lakes, and the Waters of Styx are just a few of the attractions within the Helmos-Vouraikos Geopark – one of eight Greek geoparks included in UNESCO’s Global Geoparks Network. The Helmos mountain range, also known as the Aroania Mountains, rises to 2,355 meters and boasts a variety of fascinating landscapes. Its rich history and proximity to Athens make it an ideal spring getaway into nature.

By Cog Railway or On Foot

Be sure to ride on the cog railway, the historic train that has connected Diakopto and Kalavryta since 1896. This same 22-kilometer stretch is also part of the European E4 trail. Hiking through the Vouraikos Gorge is a must for trekkers visiting the area, as the trail runs alongside the railway tracks. You can combine hiking with a train ride to ease the journey while still experiencing the gorge’s rich flora and natural beauty. The descent is much easier – starting from Zachlorou, you can hike about 14 kilometers to Diakopto and then take the train back.

Into the Depths of the Cave

One of Greece’s most impressive caves, the Cave of the Lakes, is named for the 13 small lakes found in its interior. It’s located near the village of Kastria, 16 kilometers from Kalavryta. Along the 500-meter visitor route, you’ll see three lakes and unique geological formations, including the monumental stalactites that adorn its ceiling. The site is open daily from 9:00 to 16:30 (17:30 on weekends). Admission: €9.

The Waters of Styx

Spring is the best time to tackle the hike to the Waters of Styx, located at an altitude of 1,800 meters. The classic route starts from the village of Ano Mesorougi, passing through forested areas and more challenging rocky parts. It’s a demanding hike, best attempted with an experienced mountain guide.

Picnic by the Lake

Lake Tsivlou was formed by a massive landslide in 1913 that blocked the Krathis River. Sitting at 700 meters and surrounded by fir trees, it’s a peaceful spot for a short hike or a picnic by the water. The lake is just 13 kilometers from Zarouchla.

Scenic Drive

One of the most beautiful drives in the area is the 30-kilometer route linking Zarouchla to Kalavryta. The paved road climbs from the forested slopes of Zarouchla into alpine terrain, before descending through the fir forests to the historic village of Kalavryta. Along the way, you will pass through the village of Peristera and its namesake pass, offering stunning views of Helmos’ majestic peaks, and skirt the edge of the ski center before reaching Kalavryta.
