One of the main reasons to visit Mount Olympus in the summer is the Olympus Festival (July 5 to September 7). Now in its 54th year, the festival takes place in beautiful locations such as the Ancient Theatre of Dion, the Castle of Platamonas, and the Byzantine church of Panagia Kontariotissa. Expect a rich lineup of theatrical performances, concerts, art exhibitions, symposiums, and more. Full details are available at festivalolympou.gr.
In September, the Olympus Mountaineering Marathon brings a burst of energy to the mountain. Even if you’re not a runner, you will find much to enjoy in this festive celebration of nature and sport that draws people from across the region.

On Olympus, the most refreshing swims are not in the sea but in fresh waters. The waterfalls and pools of Orlias are among the most popular. The first waterfall is just a 10-minute hike from the chapel of Aghios Konstantinos, near the village of Vrontou. If you continue for another hour, the trail leads to the larger Kokkinos Vrachos (Red Rock) waterfall.
Another must-see is the Enipeas Gorge, a scenic 12-kilometer trail (5–7 hours) from Prionia to Litochoro. Even walking part of the route rewards you with views of waterfalls and natural pools, especially near the historic Monastery of Aghios Dionysios.
If you’re still craving the sea, the entire Pieria coastline – from Neoi Poroi to Katerini and beyond (Platamonas, Panteleimonas, Skotina, and Leptokarya) – is lined with long beaches. Expect sunbeds, umbrellas, cafés, and lively summer crowds.

For a peaceful walk among history, visit the archaeological site of Dion, where ruins of ancient villas, sanctuaries, baths, and homes lie hidden within lush greenery. The Archaeological Museum is equally impressive, showcasing mosaics, statues, inscriptions, and artifacts from the Roman era (Tel. (+30) 23510.532.06).
Another worthwhile detour is to Platamonas Castle, perched above the sea. Though the current structure dates from the Byzantine period, its roots go back to antiquity. The views alone are worth the visit (Tel. (+30) 23520.444.70).
Gastrodromio en Olympo (Litochoro, Τel. (+30) 23520.213.00) is known for creative dishes and soups – even in summer – along with a variety of inspired seasonal meals. For authentic Italian pizzas (and other options), try the elegant Vergina (Neoi Poroi, Τel. (+30) 23520.419.18), right by the sea. Floisvos (Platamonas, Τel. (+30) 23520.414.09) is a classic seafood destination. Scholeio (Palaioi Pori, tel. (+30) 693.245.0366) is a charming taverna serving traditional home-cooked dishes and grilled meats in a cool mountain setting. For ouzo and meze, try Xarti (Platamonas, Τel. (+30) 694.613.0644). Taverna tis Harikleias (Neos Panteleimonas, Τel. (+30) 23520.414.73) is a go-to for meat dishes. Agnanti (Palaios Panteleimonas, Τel. (+30) 23520.221.28) is also excellent for traditional meals and grilled specialties.

Evenings are magical in Palaios Panteleimonas. As the sun sets over the Thermaic Gulf, the village square glows with warm light reflected off its restored stone houses. Stroll along cobbled streets, explore small shops, and enjoy a drink, dessert, or coffee at Palio Kafeneio-Ta Glyka tis Fofo (Tel. (+30) 23520.222.78).
For an unforgettable sunset at high altitude, head to the peaks of Profitis ilias or Toumba, easily accessible from the Plateau of the Muses. They offer sweeping views of the region and the highest peaks – provided, of course, you’ve completed the ascent.
Take a piece of Olympus with you: mountain tea, wild oregano, sage, spoon sweets, and local honey. You’ll find great options in Palaios Panteleimonas or Litochoro.
In summer, Pieria’s beaches can be busy – sunbeds packed, umbrellas everywhere. For a quieter, more refreshing experience, stay closer to the mountain. Mount Olympus offers a vast network of trails suitable for all fitness levels. Many lower-altitude paths wind through dense forests near Vrontou, Palaioi Pori, and Palaios Panteleimonas, while others lead to scenic mountain refuges.
Litochoro is the perfect base for your adventure, with an easy drive up to Prionia – a great place to get a true taste of the mountain’s majesty.
