Athens Among the World’s Best Spa Break Destinations

The Greek capital ranked fourth in a recent study, listing cities with the most options for spa treatments.

No one is surprised whenever Athens is named a top city for cultural experiences, good food or nightlife. But did you know that the city also boasts a plethora of spa options?

As wellness tourism grows, with more and more people looking to pamper themselves both physically and mentally while on holiday, retreats are constantly being launched around Greece, and spa facilities are upping their game as well. In a recent study by money.co.uk, analyzing TripAdvisor data for spa and wellness listings in nearly every city in the UK, EU, Canada and the USA, the Greek capital was found to be the fourth best city to head to for a “spa break.”

The results were calculated by comparing the number of spa facilities available in each city with their size. They were then ranked in order of number of spas per square kilometer.

With 83 spas in total, Athens offers visitors 2.1 spas per square kilometer. The only cities boasting more options are Paris (which features an impressive 965 spas throughout the city), Barcelona and Brussels. Overall, Europe outshone the cities in the US, Canada and the UK, as nine of the cities in the top ten were European.

Regarding Athens, it is worth noting that besides the generous number of options, the study also revealed comparatively very low prices for treatments at the city’s facilities – the cheapest, in fact, in the top twenty. A top-rated venue in Athens, the study noted, charges just €35 for 60 minutes in the hammam.
