The “Great Celebration” of Greek Flavors
Foodies gear up for major gathering…
Ready for take-off? Athens Flying Week (AFW) returns this September for its 12th edition, promising an aviation extravaganza like no other. From September 3 to 8, the skies over central Greece will roar to life, but the main air show unfolds on September 6–7 at Tanagra Air Base, about 70km north of Athens.
AFW is Southeast Europe’s largest air show, drawing aviation enthusiasts, families, and curious travelers alike.
This year’s program promises to deliver an electrifying mix of past and present. Cutting-edge fighter jets like the French Rafale, German and Saudi Arabian Eurofighter Typhoons, Italy’s iconic Tornado, and Poland’s F-16 “Tiger” Demo Team will light up the skies with high-octane maneuvers.
The Hellenic Air Force’s F-16 “Zeus” and T-6 Daedalus Demo Teams lead the home lineup, while civilian flying aces Mélanie Astles and Italy’s Luca Salvadori (“Silver Chicken”) bring finesse to the aerobatic routines.
For lovers of aviation history, a true legend will doubtless steal the show: the British Supermarine Spitfire, a symbol of WWII heroism. Greece received its first Spitfires in 1943, and the recently restored LF Mk IXc MJ755, once flown by the Royal Hellenic Air Force after the war, now returns to inspire a new generation. The show also features historic T-6 Harvard trainers, plus venerable Mirage 2000-5 and F-4 Phantom jets – an irresistible blend of nostalgia and raw power.
On the ground, the excitement continues with Greece’s largest static aircraft display to date. Wander among helicopters, fighter jets, and cargo planes, meet the pilots and engineers, and – if you’re lucky – step inside for a cockpit selfie.
Reaching Tanagra from Athens is straightforward: drive up and enjoy free on-site parking or hop on the shuttle from Doukissis Plakentias Metro Station (€20 per trip). Alternatively, take the train to Oinoi Station (on the Piraeus-Platy railway line to Chalcis) and walk about 30 minutes to the entrance.
Tickets start at €7.50 for the Public Area (bring your own chairs and sunscreen). If you want more comfort, reserved seats (€15) or Seat & Shadow zones (€35) offer shade, while VIP packages (€75) and VVIP lounges (€250) include prime views, exclusive perks, and gourmet touches.
Arrive early for the best vantage points, pack light but smart (hat, sunscreen, comfy shoes), and bring cash for snacks or souvenirs as ATMs are limited. Plenty of shaded dining areas serve drinks and light bites, and giant screens ensure you won’t miss a single aerial stunt. Accessibility services are available but leave pets at home – dogs are not permitted.
Whether you’re a die-hard aviation buff or just seeking a spectacular day out, Athens Flying Week promises two unforgettable days of noise, nostalgia, and non-stop excitement.
