Athens has once again taken center stage on the European tourism map, securing two top distinctions at the 32nd World Travel Awards 2025 – one of the industry’s most prestigious annual events.
The Greek capital was crowned Europe’s Leading Cultural City Destination, while the City of Athens Convention & Visitors Bureau (This is Athens – ACVB) was named Europe’s Leading City Tourist Board, reaffirming the city’s growing reputation as both a cultural powerhouse and a competitive conference hub.
In the cultural destination category, Athens triumphed over some of Europe’s most iconic cities, including Paris, London, Rome, Prague, Venice, Lisbon, Edinburgh, and Dubrovnik. Likewise, in the tourist board category, it outperformed Madrid, Lisbon, Rome, London, Berlin, and Batumi.
These dual victories continue a remarkable winning streak for the Greek capital. In 2024, Athens was named both the World’s Leading Cultural City Destination and Europe’s Leading City Break Destination, underscoring the city’s transformation into a year-round destination for visitors seeking a blend of history, creativity, and modern urban life.

Founded in 1993, the World Travel Awards celebrate excellence across every sector of the global travel and tourism industry. This year’s Europe Gala Ceremony took place in Sardinia, Italy, on October 22, bringing together leading destinations, brands, and professionals from across the continent.
Athens Mayor Haris Doukas hailed the city’s dual triumphs as the result of a shared effort across its cultural and tourism sectors. “Athens’ distinction as Europe’s leading cultural destination is the result of collective effort,” he said. “This award belongs to the people of the city – the tourism professionals, creators, and workers who keep Athens’ pulse alive every day. In our city, the past meets the future, culture meets contemporary life, and tradition meets innovation. With planning and consistency, we are steadily rising on Europe’s cultural and tourism map.”
The success was also welcomed by Ioannis Georgizas, CEO of Development Athens, the municipal organization behind This is Athens – ACVB. “These distinctions are the fruit of a long-term, coordinated strategy,” he noted. “Through targeted actions and partnerships, we promote Athens internationally as a modern, sustainable, and culturally rich destination, capable of hosting major conferences and events throughout the year.”

Athens’ success reflects a broader strategy by the City of Athens to combine cultural development with sustainable tourism. Through Development Athens, the municipality has launched initiatives such as the Athens City Festival and “Athens Without Cars,” part of European Car-Free Day, while continuously enhancing infrastructure and accessibility across key neighborhoods and heritage sites.
Meanwhile, This is Athens – ACVB continues to promote the capital as an ideal venue for international meetings and events. Each spring, the This is Athens – Agora, the city’s largest B2B tourism fair, brings together travel professionals from around the world to showcase new opportunities and partnerships.
From its world-famous ancient landmarks to its dynamic arts, gastronomy, and events scene, Athens continues to prove that its cultural heart beats stronger than ever – a city where tradition and innovation truly meet.
