A permanent fence has been installed around the Temple of Apollo, also known as Portara, on the Aegean island of Naxos, following a July incident in which a tourist was photographed lifting an ancient stone from the monument.
The Ministry of Culture said the project was carried out by the Ephorate of Antiquities of the Cyclades as originally planned, despite objections from the Municipality of Naxos.
In the same statement, the ministry criticized municipal authorities over the recent arrest of members of the Ephorate of Antiquities, calling the incident “inexcusable.”
The ministry also noted that the Municipality of Naxos has withdrawn its legal request for the immediate removal of the temporary fence surrounding the 6th-century BC temple.
