Each summer, Greece shines in the spotlight of international travel media – and for good reason. With its rich cultural heritage, vibrant Mediterranean cuisine, and countless beaches framed by turquoise waters, it’s no surprise that Greek destinations frequently earn accolades from leading travel publications.
This year, the prestigious travel guide Lonely Planet released its list of 25 of the world’s best beaches, inspiring readers to plan their next getaway around these unique coastal gems, even if reaching them requires a bit of effort.
Ranked number 5 on the list is Sarakiniko Beach on Milos, noted as the “best beach for beautiful rock formations.”
As Lonely Planet describes it, “Centuries of wave-and-wind erosion made the rock formations at the beach dip and arch, creating caves to explore and alabaster cliffs to jump off.”
Located five kilometers from Plaka, the island’s capital, the beach is known for its impressive white volcanic rocks that form an otherworldly, almost lunar landscape. According to local lore, the beach’s caves were once used as hideouts and shelters by Saracen pirates, hence its name.
Lonely Planet suggests visitors sunbathe on the alabaster rocks or use them as a launch point for snorkeling and cliff diving into the crystalline Aegean Sea. For the best experience, the guide recommends coming in September or October, when the crowds thin and the atmosphere becomes more serene. Travelers are also advised to bring their own supplies, as amenities are limited. Alternatively, arriving early in the morning can offer a more tranquil visit, even during peak season.
