A new travel trend is sweeping France, and Greece’s Small Cyclades are right at the heart of it. According to the popular website Generation Voyage, which attracts millions of young French readers, “micro-islands” have become one of the most sought-after holiday choices. These are small, easy-to-explore destinations that don’t require a car, yet offer visitors everything they need for a perfect getaway.
“Greece has little islands as beautiful as small pieces of paradise,” the site notes. “These non-mainstream destinations offer authentic experiences that cannot be compared to the larger Mediterranean islands.”
Among the website’s “top ten” tiny oases, the Small Cyclades, otherwise known as the Lesser Cyclades – a scattering of 32 islets southeast of Naxos – rank among the very best. Remote yet accessible, these islands have long been a well-kept secret for those seeking a slower, more traditional pace of life, far from the bustle of Mykonos or Santorini.
The list singles out several of the group’s highlights. “The history of Iraklia, which spans more than 5,000 years, is linked to prehistoric human presence, numerous fascinating rock carvings, as well as fortification and temple remains. Just a breath away lies another little gem, Schinoussa, with its enchanting beaches, impressive trails, and windmills rising from the depths of the past. Donousa also could not be left out of the list, as the ideal peaceful destination where visitors can recover their lost energy. The charming landscapes of the Koufonisia complete the stunning ‘micro-island’ world of the Cyclades, with tavernas and sandy beaches that resemble a theatrical stage.”
The recognition comes as no surprise to those who know the Small Cyclades well. Home to just a few hundred permanent residents, these islands charm visitors with their pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, rustic, family-run tavernas, and a sense of timelessness that larger destinations often lack. Ferries from Naxos make them surprisingly easy to reach, yet they retain the atmosphere of true island hideaways.
For local authorities, the growing interest in these “micro-islands” is proof that international visitors are increasingly drawn to off-the-beaten-track destinations, and not just in high season. “Summer in Naxos and the Small Cyclades continues – and in fact, it is even better in September,” said Vangelis Katsaras, Deputy Mayor of Tourism for Naxos and the Small Cyclades. “The excellent climate, dozens of different options for every type of holiday, very good prices, outstanding gastronomy, and traditional festivals all attract international tourism beyond the peak season.”
With French travelers leading the way, the word is out: Greece’s Small Cyclades are no longer a secret, but they remain as enchanting as ever.
