The Cycladic island of Syros has been named one of the world’s most exciting island destinations for 2026, ranking fourth in Expedia’s annual Island Hot List.
Compiled by the global travel company, the list highlights fast-rising island destinations that combine natural beauty, authentic local experiences, and strong cultural appeal, as increasing numbers of travelers seek alternatives to more crowded holiday hotspots.
According to Expedia, online searches for Syros have risen by 60 percent over the past year, reflecting growing international interest in an island that offers a more authentic Cycladic experience than neighboring Santorini and Mykonos.
The island was singled out for its distinctive blend of gastronomy, neoclassical architecture and traditional Greek character. At its heart is Ermoupoli, one of Greece’s most elegant island capitals, renowned for its grand 19th-century mansions, impressive public buildings, and lively waterfront. Above the town, the medieval settlement of Ano Syros preserves a maze of narrow marble-paved streets and centuries of history.
Beyond its architectural treasures, Syros has increasingly established itself as one of Greece’s leading cultural destinations. From internationally acclaimed music festivals and theatrical performances to museums, galleries and a thriving café culture, the island offers visitors a rich cultural calendar alongside its beaches and celebrated local cuisine, including the famous Syros loukoumi.
St. Lucia claimed the top spot in Expedia’s 2026 ranking, followed by Porto Santo in Portugal and Praslin in the Seychelles. Syros came fourth, ahead of Norway’s Lofoten Islands, Palawan in the Philippines, Puerto Rico’s Culebra, Florida’s Sanibel Island, Vietnam’s Phu Quoc, and Fiji.
Expedia said global interest in island holidays continues to grow, with searches for island destinations increasing by an average of 55 percent year-on-year and related social media conversations also rising significantly. Melanie Fish, Head of Expedia Group Brands Public Relations, said islands continue to appeal to travelers because they offer good value for money, thanks in part to all-inclusive resorts and bundled travel deals.
Syros’ latest international recognition further strengthens its reputation as one of Greece’s most rewarding island escapes – offering visitors a rare combination of history, culture, outstanding food and authentic Cycladic charm without the crowds that have come to define some of the region’s better-known destinations.
