The Theopetra Cave and Museum in the Municipality of Meteora are experiencing a popularity boom, with visitor numbers rising steadily month after month, according to local authorities and the Ephorate of Palaeoanthropology and Speleology.

According to official admission figures, more than 23,500 people toured the site between April and December 2025, while turnout topped 3,000 in April 2026 alone, underscoring the area’s expanding footprint in cultural tourism.

“The Theopetra Cave and Museum represent an invaluable archaeological and cultural treasure, not just for the Municipality of Meteora, but for the entire nation,” Meteora Mayor Lefteris Avramopoulos told the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA-MPA). “This sustained rise in attendance confirms that Theopetra is cementing its position as a major hub for cultural tourism and learning.”

Perched on the northern slope of a limestone formation overlooking the surrounding plain, the cave lies along the Trikala-Kalambaka road, just three kilometers outside Kalambaka in Central Greece. It sits roughly 300 meters above sea level and 100 meters above the valley floor.

Spanning approximately 500 square meters, the cave features an expansive arched entrance – 17 meters wide by three meters high – that bathes the interior in natural light while offering visitors striking views of the iconic Meteora rock formations and monasteries.
