Summer might be over, but Greece’s island-hopping season clearly hasn’t received the memo. As temperatures drop and the height of the summer crowds move into the rear-view mirror, travelers are making new choices about where to spend their time by the sea. Some familiar favorites are holding their ground, while others are enjoying an unexpected fall boost, according to new data from ferry-booking platform Ferryhopper.
For Greek travelers, Aegina, a stone’s throw from Athens, remains a firm favorite, holding on to first place through September, with Tinos close behind. October, however, brings a change of scenery at the top of the rankings. Crete makes an impressive climb from fifth place in summer to first, pushing Aegina and Corfu down the list. Corfu has plenty to celebrate, too, jumping from eighth place in September to third in October. Chios and Lesvos also make their way into the domestic top 10, while Paros slips from third place in summer to sixth in September.
The picture becomes even more interesting when we look at international travelers. For Americans, Paros leads the way in September, but Santorini is clearly making a late-season impression. Rising from fourth place in summer to second in September, the famous Cycladic island claims the top spot in October.
British travelers, meanwhile, have a change of heart of their own. Naxos takes over from Paros as their favorite in September, but it’s Rhodes that really steals the show. From tenth place in summer, the Dodecanese island climbs to sixth in September and first in October, with Corfu following close behind.
German travelers are rather more consistent in their tastes. Naxos holds on to first place throughout summer, September and October, with Corfu and Aegina following in October. Paros and Kos complete the German top five.
French visitors also seem increasingly drawn to Naxos as the season progresses. Paros leads their rankings in summer and September, before Naxos takes over in October. Aegina moves up to third place, while Hydra and Agistri also find a place among the French market’s 10 most popular destinations.
And then there’s Paros, which continues to work its magic on travelers from much farther afield. The island remains the number-one choice among Australians throughout summer and into October. Santorini makes a notable advance, rising from sixth place in summer to second in October, while Naxos holds steady in third. Ios, by contrast, loses a little ground, slipping from fourth place in summer to eighth in September.
The message? There’s plenty of life in Greece’s islands after the summer rush. And while some destinations may be putting away their beach umbrellas for another year, others are clearly finding a whole new audience as the fall season unfolds.
