Nestled amidst the lush greenery and dense fir forests of the Pindus range, at altitudes of 921 and 1,150 meters respectively, Elati and Pertouli are ideal destinations for anyone who loves mountain getaways. The journey there is as enchanting as the destination itself, with the landscape transforming into a mesmerizing display of nature as you approach the village of Pyli.

True to its name, Pyli – which means “Gate” in Greek – serves as the gateway to the mountainous terrain of southern Pindus. The village is built at the mouth of the Portaios River gorge, between the Itanos and Koziakas opposing mountains. About a kilometer outside Pyli stands a remarkable stone bridge, a stunning piece of architecture believed to have been built in 1514. Its single arch spans 67 meters, serving as a lasting testament to the craftsmanship of a bygone era.

A 13-kilometer uphill drive brings you to the village Elati, one of the largest in the area. Elati offers a wide range of accommodations, dining options, and coffee spots to suit every traveler. At Pantseilinos, wild mountain greens, handmade pies, grilled meats, casseroles and game take center stage. For something more robust, Ta Kanavia is known for its tender pork knuckle, perfectly grilled steaks, vegetable fritters, and fresh salads. If you’re lucky, you might snag a table by the window to take in the panoramic views of the mountains. Meanwhile, “Symposio” is the place to savor oven-baked lamb and expertly prepared meats.

For a sweet break or a good cup of coffee, Kechri offers an inviting setting with enchanting decor and a warm atmosphere. Alternatively, Krypte serves exceptional handmade desserts in a cozy environment. As night falls, Grizzly Bear becomes the social hub of Elati, with an extensive drink menu and hot cocktails perfect for the crisp mountain evenings.

On Saturdays, Elati’s local market comes alive, brimming with fresh fruits, vegetables, dried nuts, aromatic herbs, honey, and other regional delicacies – an excellent opportunity to bring home a taste of the mountains.

Elati is also a haven for outdoor activities, offering a network of trails that cater to all levels of experience. No matter the route, from a short hike to Aghia Triada or Kokkinos Vrachos to a more demanding trek to the Koziakas refuge, you’ll find yourself immersed in the tranquil beauty of the mountain.

Nine kilometers past Elati, on the way to Pertouli, lies the Pertouli Ski Center, a popular destination that’s among the first in the area to receive snowfall each year. Even if skiing isn’t your thing, you can enjoy the cozy atmosphere of the chalet, with a cup of hot chocolate in hand.

Both Pertouli and nearby Neraidochori offer additional opportunities to relax and indulge in local flavors. In Pertouli, the taverna Panagiotis and the cafe Lichnari stand out, while in Neraidochori, Niavis and Margaritis are excellent choices for traditional meals.

Elati is located 349 km from Athens, about a four-hour drive, with tolls costing approximately €44 and fuel expenses estimated at €90 for a round-trip journey. If you’re traveling from Thessaloniki, the distance is shorter – 248 km, or about three hours of driving, with tolls at €16 and fuel costs around €60 for a round-trip.
