2017 A Record Year for Greek Airports

Even before the year has ended, more passengers have traveled through Greek airports in 2017 than in any other previous year.

2017 has seen record numbers of passengers traveling through Greek airports during the first 11 months of the year, already surpassing the traffic seen throughout the entire year of 2016.

Specifically, according to statistics from the Greek Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), the number of passengers passing through Greek airports reached 55.8 million by the end of November. That is a 9.8% increased compared to the equivalent figure from this time last year (50.8 mln passengers).

It is also over 2 million more passengers than traveled though Greek airports by the end of 2016 (53.6 mln passengers), meaning that 2017 is already an all-time record breaking year for passenger traffic.

The increase in traffic is also not confined to the summer months. November of 2017 saw 2.3 million passengers using Greek airports, an average increase of 8.1% compared to the same month last year.

In terms of arrivals of passengers from abroad the increase was even greater. 549,780 passengers arrived in Greece on international flights last month, compared to 491,490 in November of 2016, an increase of 11.9%.

The airports with the highest amounts of traffic during November were those of Athens, Thessaloniki, Irakleio, Rhodes and Chania.
