The island of Alonissos in the western Aegean is gearing up to host the first international film festival in Greece dedicated entirely to the sea, in the heart of the country’s largest marine park.
Set for October 9-12, the inaugural Alonissos Movies of the Sea (AMoS) Film Festival aims to showcase the importance of marine ecosystems while highlighting the island and the National Marine Park of Alonissos and North Sporades as a model for sustainable management. It also underscores the role of the local community in protecting and utilizing natural assets for long-term development.
The program comprises features and shorts – fiction, documentary and animation – for audiences of all ages, all centered on seas and oceans. Screenings will be accompanied by parallel activities such as art workshops, beach cleanups and boat trips, reinforcing the festival’s conservation message.
Prince Albert II of Monaco will open the event during his visit to the Sporades in support of Mediterranean monk seal protection.
Organizers say the festival’s ultimate goal is to connect one of Europe’s largest marine parks with high-quality cinema, raising awareness of the marine environment and inspiring stronger engagement in its protection. They hope the event will grow into an annual meeting point for filmmakers and environmental advocates alike.
