International media spotlight the Peloponnese as…
A towering mural honoring opera legend Maria Callas in the southern Greek city of Kalamata has been named the world’s best mural for 2025 by Street Art Cities, an international platform that documents and promotes urban art.
The large-scale work, created by Greek visual artist KLE – the professional name of Kleomenis Kostopoulos – covers the full height of a residential building on Aristomenous Street and has quickly become one of Kalamata’s most recognizable landmarks.
The mural was commissioned by the Municipality of Kalamata as part of a broader effort to enhance the city center with contemporary public art. Since its completion, it has attracted steady attention from residents and visitors alike and has been widely shared across travel and art communities.
The depiction of Callas, surrounded by branches, birds and fruit, symbolizes the connection between humans and nature, the platform said, a relationship that remains strong in the region of Messinia and particularly in Kalamata.
In a post on social media, the artist thanked those who supported the work, calling the distinction a collective achievement.
