The Acropolis Museum will welcome guests for an extended night of art and culture during this year’s August full moon celebration, taking place on Saturday, August 9. A cherished tradition across Greece, the August full moon is marked annually by evening events at museums and archaeological sites under the summer sky.
From 9:00 am to midnight (final admission at 11:30 pm), visitors can explore the Museum’s permanent collections as well as the temporary exhibition, “Allspice | Michael Rakowitz & Ancient Cultures.” While general admission applies for the permanent galleries, entry to the Rakowitz exhibition is free of charge.

Presented in collaboration with contemporary art foundation NEON, Allspice brings together powerful works by Iraqi-American artist Michael Rakowitz with ancient artifacts from the Middle East and southeastern Mediterranean. The installation encourages reflection on themes of cultural memory, displacement, and continuity.
The Museum’s second-floor restaurant will also stay open until midnight, offering a chance to enjoy dinner with sweeping views of the illuminated Acropolis. Free access tickets are required and can be collected from the Ticket Desk. Advance reservations are essential and can be made by phone or email.
Meanwhile, the Excavation Museum, located beneath the main building, will be open from 9:00 am to 8:00 pm, offering a rare glimpse into the ancient neighborhoods that once thrived beneath modern-day Athens.

Now in its third decade, Greece’s August full moon events have become a summer highlight, initiated by the Ministry of Culture to connect locals and travelers alike with the country’s rich heritage in a magical setting. Each year, dozens of sites across Greece open their doors after dark, hosting concerts, exhibitions, and guided tours, often free or at reduced rates.
With its panoramic views, unique archaeological setting, and compelling blend of ancient and contemporary art, the Acropolis Museum remains one of the premier venues for these moonlit festivities.
