Straddling the line between the Cyclades and the Dodecanese, the island of Astypalea has quietly emerged as a favorite among discerning French travelers. This summer, it claimed the top spot in nosvoyagesheureux.fr’s ranking of six “secret” Greek islands still untouched by mass tourism.
Dubbed the “butterfly of the Aegean” for its distinctive shape, Astypalea offers more than just stunning landscapes. The travel site praises it as “a well-preserved Greece… a precious gem untouched by standardization.” From Hora, the island’s postcard-perfect capital, whitewashed alleyways climb to a striking Venetian castle, where sweeping sea views reward every step.
What sets Astypalea apart – beyond its tranquil beaches and sun-drenched tavernas – is the way it embraces a forward-thinking, eco-conscious tourism while staying rooted in its age-old traditions. “The island combines the charm of whitewashed houses with the Venetian influence of its medieval castle,” writes nosvoyagesheureux.fr.
Local flavors, too, play a starring role. Tavernas serve rustic dishes featuring “aromatic honey, unique cheeses, and freshly grilled fish” under starlit skies.
Its quiet magic hasn’t gone unnoticed elsewhere in France. Cosmopolitan France calls it “unlike any other,” praising its blend of turquoise waters, authenticity, and groundbreaking plans to become the Mediterranean’s first fully smart and sustainable island.
That ambitious vision is well underway. “Our goal is development under sound conditions that safeguard and protect Astypalea’s natural environment and cultural heritage, enhance the residents’ quality of life, and promote sustainable tourism,” said Deputy Mayor Kostas Kampylis. He added, “A top priority remains the further development of the ‘Astypalea – Smart and Sustainable Island’ program, which aims to establish the island as a global model of green mobility and circular economy.”
Recent projects include improved roads, marked hiking trails, and a new cultural center-museum near the Castle, designed to house findings from a unique ancient necropolis that once held the remains of infants and children. Restoration of the Castle’s outer walls and the opening of a folklore museum inside further highlight Astypalea’s commitment to cultural heritage and innovation.
Alongside Astypalea, nosvoyagesheureux.fr’s top six “secret” Greek island escapes include: Ithaki, Ikaria, Kastellorizo, Folegandros, and Amorgos – each with its own quiet allure.
Astypalea, though, may be the only one proving that the future of tourism doesn’t have to come at the cost of the past.
