Athens is Ranked the Cheapest City Break in Europe

The average amount of money spent by UK tourists in the Greek capital for a weekend break has fallen by 15% since 2021, new research reveals.

Research by Post Office Travel Money has revealed that Athens is Europe’s cheapest city break destination, as the cost of a weekend in the Greek capital is lower for foreign visitors than the more “economical” cities in Eastern Europe.

It is the first time in the 15 years that Post Office Travel Money has been conducting this survey that a western European city has been named as the most affordable.

The research analyzed the costs UK tourists will incur in 20 popular cities, finding that prices in the Greek capital have fallen by 15% by 2021, according to The Guardian.

The calculated costs include two nights in a hotel for a couple, main meals, sightseeing and public transportation around the city. The total “package” comes to £207 in Athens, compared to £218 in the Portuguese capital Lisbon, the second cheapest destination.

Specifically, a British tourist in Athens will be expected to pay around £38.96 for a dinner for two with wine, £89 for two nights in a three-star hotel, and £7.79 for a 48-hour public transport pass.

Destinations usually renowned for their low prices, such as Krakow in Poland (£219), Riga in Latvia (£220) and Budapest in Hungary (£221), were rated as the next cheapest category.

Stockholm (at £421), Paris (at £423), Dublin (at £436), Copenhagen (at £456), Venice (at £457) and Amsterdam (at £593) were six of the cities that were shown to cost more than twice as much as Athens.
