From the sandy shores of the Greek islands and hidden Mediterranean coves to Portugal’s Atlantic coastline, Europe remains one of the world’s most compelling summer destinations. Its coastal gems, both famous and undiscovered, are once again in the spotlight thanks to a new ranking by European Best Destinations, which highlights the ten finest beaches on the continent. Five Greek beaches dominate the list, reaffirming the country’s reputation as the ultimate summer destination.
The ranking evaluated dozens of beaches based on the following criteria: natural beauty, water quality, accessibility, family-friendliness, authenticity, available activities, environmental preservation, beach services, nearby accommodation quality, and overall atmosphere.
The final selection showcases beaches that stand out not only for their beauty but also for the opportunity they offer visitors to disconnect from the stress and pressures of everyday life – a travel trend that has become increasingly important in recent years. Among the Greek beaches selected are Voutoumi in Antipaxos, Fteri in Kefalonia, Elafonissi in Crete, and Rovinia and Paleokastritsa in Corfu.
Ranked second overall, Voutoumi is a small turquoise bay on Antipaxos, just 20 minutes by boat from Paxos. Fine white pebbles, lush green hills, and sweeping Ionian views define this idyllic beach, which European Best Destinations described as one of the most beautiful in Europe. A visit is not complete without stopping at the small taverna located right on the beach.

Remote and perhaps all the more enchanting because of it, Fteri Beach in Kefalonia is a hidden paradise accessible either by boat or via a moderately challenging hiking trail. Surrounded by dramatic white cliffs and unspoiled natural beauty, it is an ideal escape for travelers seeking tranquility. While in the area, be sure to visit the nearby village of Zola.
At the southwestern tip of Crete lies a beach of almost tropical beauty. Sand dunes, cedar trees, white lilies, and the famous pink hues created by crushed seashells make Elafonissi one of Greece’s most striking coastal landscapes. The small islet is part of the Natura 2000 network, thanks to its fragile dune ecosystem and more than 100 rare plant species. With extensive organized facilities and shallow waters, it is particularly well suited to families with children.

Near the village of Liapades on Corfu’s west coast lies Rovinia Beach. Untouched by tourist facilities and featuring a hidden sea cave, Rovinia is one of the Ionian’s most distinctive beaches. Located about 20 kilometers from Corfu Town, it is tucked away beneath the rugged mountains of the western coastline and can be reached via scenic paths lined with olive groves and oak trees.
Paleokastritsa is a popular resort village in northwestern Corfu, named after the nearby Angelokastro, the island’s oldest castle. The main beach lies below the historic monastery, while the surrounding area is home to six picturesque coves and beaches. Several of these can only be accessed by boat.
The list also includes the following beaches: Monte Clérigo in the Algarve, Portugal; Bogliasco Beach in Italy; Cala Mesquida in Mallorca, Spain; Kvalvika Beach in Norway; and Kaputaş Beach in Turkey.
