Tinos: This is the Second-Best Free Art Gallery in Europe

Known as a pilgrimage site, the Panagia Evangelistria Cathedral has a lot to offer its visitors.

Panagia Evangelistria Cathedral and Museums on Tinos is the second-best free art gallery in Europe, according to a report from UK business training company The Knowledge Academy, based on Tripadvisor reviews.

Scoring just 0.1 of a mark behind the Wallace Collection in London, UK, which ranks first, the galleries of the cathedral may not be very well-known around the world, yet they are visited by thousands every year.

Panagia Evangelistria (Our lady of Tinos) is Greece’s most famous shrine to the Virgin Mary. Most visitors who come here are pilgrims, traveling to the Cycladic island to plead with the virgin, known as the “bringer of good news.”

But tourists are also welcome, and many come here to see the famous Church of Evaggelistria and the miracle-performing icon which was found here. What fewer people know, is that within the cathedral are also several spaces containing exhibits – art and artefacts donated to the church by grateful worshippers. It includes an important exhibition of icons and religious relics; the Sacristy, containing works of ecclesiastical silversmithery and gold embroidery, as well as the Museum of Tinian Artists, with sculptures and paintings by prominent local artists; another gallery displaying works by Greek and foreign painters; a special exhibition dedicated to the Greek sculptor Antonios Sohos; and the Elli Mausoleum monument, dedicated to the crew of the battle cruiser ELLI, the first victims of World War II in Greece.
