Northern Evia Reinventing Itself for Tourism

Occupancy at holiday accommodations in summer 2022 are expected to reach up to 80% as the region presents attractive new activities.

In the aftermath of the devastating fires that ravaged the northern part of Evia island last year, local authorities and hospitality industry figureheads are coming up with new ways to give this part of the island a fresh identity and greater touristic appeal.

For a long time, the Municipality of Istria–Aidipsos presented the island as a prime destination for chiefly domestic family, religious and hot spring tourism.

The President of the Aidipsos Hoteliers Association Theodoros Roumeliotis has underlined that it’s now the time to develop and promote a new and improved version of the region. This summer the main target of the campaign are Greek and Balkan tourists.

The wide, age-old appeal of the thermal baths and springs in the region will remain at the centre of northern Evia’s rebranding campaign. Beyond the renowned Aidipsos springs the new campaign is highlighting hiking adventures, water sports and beaches as well as horseback riding and visits to historical monasteries.

Judging from bookings made at Easter this year and for the upcoming Holy Spirit (Agiou Pnevmatos) long weekend, occupancy rates are expected to reach up to 80%, with Edipsos being the most popular choice.

Roumeliotis noted that several initiatives such as ‘Tourism for All’ government program, launched in 2020, the North Evia Pass, the Evia Film Project, Authentic Marathon Swim in Pefki, the new paths on Mount Telethrio and infrastructure on the many kilometres of coastline of the Municipality of Istiaia-Edipsos are all very positive poles of attraction that will help to make northern Evia an attractive destination to tourists from around the world.
