The renewed focus follows a targeted press trip organized by the Municipality of Western Samos – and suggests the island’s quiet rise may be entering a new phase.

According to the widely read German travel site Reisereporter, Samos ranks among Greece’s “hidden treasures,” standing out as one of the few destinations where visitors can still enjoy “genuine travel experiences” largely untouched by overtourism. For an island in the eastern Aegean – best known as the birthplace of ancient philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras – that sense of discovery is part of the appeal.

Particular attention is given to Potami, near Karlovasi, where a pebble beach, crystalline waters, and lush hiking trails lead to cascading waterfalls. It’s a landscape that feels worlds away from the more crowded corners of the Mediterranean, offering what many travelers increasingly seek: immersion, exploration, and a slower rhythm.

That same balance defines the broader character of western Samos, as highlighted by German website Greece Moments. The site presents the region as a destination of contrasts, where industrial heritage meets unspoiled nature. Karlovasi emerges as a historic and economic hub, its neoclassical buildings and old tanneries recalling a prosperous past, while Marathokampos offers a more laid-back experience of seaside tavernas and scenic village life.

Dominating the island’s western skyline is Mount Kerkis, one of the Aegean’s most imposing peaks. With its network of hiking paths and dramatic views, it underscores Samos’ growing reputation as a multi-layered destination – equally suited to beachgoers, walkers, and cultural travelers.

“Our region offers a unique combination of nature, culture, and authenticity – elements we must showcase in a systematic way,” said Vangelis Marnezos, Deputy Mayor for Tourism of the Municipality of Western Samos. “In an international environment marked by uncertainty and changing conditions, the continuous promotion of our destination’s many facets is not a choice but a necessity. Samos has the raw materials to establish itself as a modern, sustainable, and attractive destination for visitors from around the world.”

That confidence appears to be well placed. At ITB Berlin 2026, one of the world’s leading travel exhibitions, Samos presented a unified front, with both municipalities sharing a modern, joint pavilion. Meetings with tourism stakeholders, journalists, and bloggers from across Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Scandinavia, and the United Kingdom were described as highly productive.

Crucially, discussions also extended to air connectivity. Talks with representatives from Lufthansa and Discover Airlines explored the possibility of expanding flight schedules and introducing new direct routes from additional German cities – moves that could help extend the island’s tourist season beyond the traditional summer peak.

For returning visitors, however, Samos’ greatest strength may be what hasn’t changed. As previous features have noted, summers here still carry echoes of a more relaxed era  – think uncrowded beaches, family-run wineries producing the island’s famed sweet Muscat, and mountain villages where time slows to the pace of a coffee in the square. Add to that archaeological riches such as the Heraion of Samos, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to the 1,306-meter-long Tunnel of Eupalinos, described by Herodotus as the 8th Wonder of the Ancient World, and the result is a destination that feels both timeless and newly discovered.

If current trends continue, Samos may not remain a “hidden treasure” for much longer – but for now, it remains one of Greece’s most compelling places to experience authenticity on its own terms.
