The North Aegean island of Samos is emerging as one of the most talked-about travel destinations for 2026, with major international outlets identifying it as a rising star for British holidaymakers.

According to the popular UK newspaper Metro, Samos is the new international destination set to “impress British travelers thanks to new direct flights,” noting a significant surge in demand from the UK market ahead of the upcoming season. The publication highlights the island’s broad appeal, adding that “with golden sandy beaches, impressive ancient monuments and exceptional wine, there are many reasons for Samos to become an object of worship in the United Kingdom.”

Metro encourages readers to explore the island’s picturesque villages, savor its gastronomy, and embark on hiking adventures on Mount Kerkis, the island’s dramatic western peak.

Industry publication Travel Weekly has also placed Samos in third position among the world’s best destinations gaining new direct connections to British airports. The list includes global names such as Seoul, St. Louis, Punta Cana, Ottawa, Tirana, New Jersey, and Nice.

At the same time, the Municipality of Western Samos is intensifying efforts to promote the island’s diverse offering through international media networks ahead of the launch of new routes.

“Sun and sea are only one aspect of the experience British travelers are seeking on our island,” said Vangelis Marnezos, Deputy Mayor for Tourism of the Municipality of Western Samos. “There is also strong interest in gastronomy, outdoor activities, guided tours and the rich historical reserves of the place. In this direction, we are exploring synergies with organizations such as the UK office of the Greek National Tourism Organization to promote alternative tourism.”

That broader appeal is hardly surprising. Known as the birthplace of the ancient mathematician and philosopher Pythagoras, Samos combines a rich, layered history with lush natural beauty. Visitors can explore the vast Heraion of Samos, a UNESCO-listed sanctuary dedicated to Hera, and the remarkable 1,000m-long Tunnel of Eupalinos, an engineering marvel of the 6th century BC.

Beyond its archaeological wealth, the island’s fertile landscape produces the sweet Muscat wines for which it has long been famous, while traditional mountain villages, forested slopes and sweeping beaches offer a more understated Aegean experience – one that feels both authentic and refreshingly unhurried.

With improved air links placing it firmly on the British travel radar, 2026 may well be the year Samos steps confidently into the global spotlight.
