WHERE TO STAY
Many hotels and apartments in Ermoupoli are restored neoclassical mansions, turned into boutique hotels. The Vaporia neighborhood has excellent lodgings with great view. There are seaside hotels on the southern coast, such as Galissas, Posidonia, Kini and Megas Gialos.

Ethrion Hotel
Housed in an 18th-century building in the center of Ermoupoli, the hotel has double rooms and apartments with great views. Double rooms at 60-70 euros.

 

Antouanetta’s Apartments
Housed in a building constructed in 1860 and since then fully renovated, Antouanetta’s comprises seven apartments that reflect all of Ermoupoli’s classic beauty and can accommodate two to five persons. Price per couple is 70 euros per night, breakfast included.

Aktaion Hotel
This stunning stone-built (1843) hotel was one of the first in the town. Overlooking the sea, it offers comfortable, elegantly furnished rooms with wooden floors. Double rooms at 65-75 euros per night, breakfast included.

Hermes Hotel
This renowned hotel has rooms with lovely sea views and is situated in the quietest and most beautiful part of the port. Double rooms at 75 euros per night, breakfast included.

 

Reggina’s Apartments
Located just a stone’s throw from the sea, this affordable yet elegant complex has studios as well as small and large apartments and boasts impeccable service. Double rooms from 35 euros per night.

Villa Regina
Featuring attractive, uncluttered rooms, this well-situated hotel, right above Delfini beach, is a great place to unwind. Access is via a dirt road that starts at Kini village. Double rooms at 35 euros per night.

WHRE TO EAT
Visitors of  Syros will be surprised to find fine restaurants and tavernas serving local cuisine not only in Ermoupoli, but also in villages and picturesque fishing settlements.

Plakostroto
The village of San Michalis may be sparsely populated, but as the sun goes down people from all over the island flock to this traditional taverna. Visitors can expect stunning views and mouth-watering delicacies such as pork braised in wine and fennel, exochiko (country-style) lamb, local sausage and eggplant with feta cheese and tomato.

 

Tarsanas
Menu highlights in this striking taverna situated inside a shipyard include delicious shrimp saganaki (pan-seared), pantremenes (grilled) sardines and steamed mussels.

Tis Filomilas
Overlooking the sea, this restaurant is famous for its grilled octopus and fried squid as well as the lachmatzoun (meat pie), kebabs and homemade mezedes (tapas-like small dishes).

Offering a unique panoramic view of Ermoupoli, this is the perfect place to relax, sip tsipouro (strong alcoholic drink made from crushed grape residue) and enjoy tasty meze including local sausage, pan-fried giant white beans with tomato sauce, grilled sardines and much more.

Dyo Tzitzikia st’Armyrikia
Great seafood including crispy anchovies (gavros), skillfully fried squid and a variety of fish that depends on the catch of the day is served right on the beach, under the shady trees.

 

Aeriko
The best way to savor as many different dishes as possible in this traditional fish taverna is to order some ouzo or tsipouro and indulge in the assortment of meze accompanying the drinks.

Bars and other nighttime entertainment venues in Syros are ideal for enjoying a drink and relaxing, and often offer marvelous views of the sunset and the open sea.

Kouchico
Finding a seat at this small café can be something of a challenge, but coffee lovers are advised to at least grab a cup to go as this place is famous for making the best espresso and cappuccino on the island.

 

Sta Vaporia
Situated directly above Asteria beach, overlooking some stunning, traditional villas, the café serves coffee in the daytime, drinks and food at night.

Elia
Operating as a bar, restaurant and art space, the venue is conveniently located above the main square and is popular with visitors looking for something different.

Daidadi Gelato
Situated close to the port and nicknamed “The Italian,” this place has become a local legend because of its delicious ice creams.

Maison de Meze
This cozy, elegant shop sells a variety of local delicatessen products but also serves tsipouro accompanied by a selection of meze, in a friendly environment. Service is impeccable.

Boheme del Mar
A well-established hotspot in Syros’ nightlife, this busy bar plays alternative music, appeals to a mixed crowd ranging from 20-year-olds to 50-year-olds and is open until dawn.

GETTING THERE
Both Blue Star Ferries and Hellenic Seaways run daily from the port of Piraeus. Single tickets for the four-hour trip cost € 30 per adult and € 72 per vehicle. Olympic Air flies daily to Syros at 06.50, except Fridays. Ticket prices for the 45-minute flight vary, depending on availability.
