Astypalea is famous for its sunrises. At daybreak, head to Hora to watch the first rays of sunlight bathe the beautiful settlement and its famous windmills in golden light, as jackdaws call overhead.

Aghios Ioannis Makrys is a beautiful chapel on the west side of the island. From here, a 30-minute trail leads down to the beach of the same name.

A boat trip to Kokkinos Gremos, with its impressive red cliffs and caves, is a memorable experience. Excursion boats can also take you to the nearby islets of Kounoupes and Koutsomytis.

Beautiful Hora combines Cycladic and Dodecanese architectural elements. Whitewashed chapels and low Cycladic houses stand alongside elegant mansions built in the Dodecanese style.

While Astypalea’s Hora is visible from almost every part of the island, it is not visible from the sea to protect it from pirates. Here, it is seen from Exo Nisi, the island’s western section.

The island is renowned for its fish and lobster. Traditional fishing boats are moored at Pera Gialos, Hora’s harbor.

In Vathy, on the wilder Mesa Nisi, the island’s eastern section, you’ll find a vast bay that resembles a lagoon, as well as wild goats, livestock enclosures and dry-stone walls. The island has a long tradition in livestock farming, and exploring this rugged corner of Astypalea is a rewarding experience.

At the quiet, sheltered beach of Schoinontas, tamarisk trees provide natural shade, while a few charming tavernas offer the perfect setting for a meal by the sea.
