Cycladic Island of the Day: An Easygoing Side of Mykonos

The hugely popular "Monaco of the Cyclades" still has a few hidden surprises. Here's our tips for some of the best places to eat and relax away from the crowds.

Where is the most beautiful garden in Hora?

The one at Cine Manto (tel. (+30) 22890-26165), an open-air cinema nestled in an all-day oasis measuring 150 acres, in the center of Mykonos Town. Begin your day here with a hearty breakfast accompanied by the sound of birds chirping and the crisp Aegean air – ask for the “Manto Special” consisting of scrambled eggs and other local produce. Do not miss out on the exceptional souvlaki, it’s a specialty.

What are this summer’s hottest new arrivals?

Mykonos Social by Jason Atherton, the Michelin-award winning British chef’s first restaurant in Greece, at the Santa Marina hotel (tel. (+30) 22890-23220) in Ornos, for an incomparable fine dining experience. Nōema (tel. (+30) 22894-48277) is a hybrid multispace in Hora, featuring a restaurant, a bar with live events and an exclusive concept store, brainchild of legendary restaurateur Richard Caring. And of course, JackieO’ Cantina Mykonos (tel. (+30) 22890-79315), JackieO’s newest sibling, for sophisticated street food (souvlaki and Indian dosa, both sweet and savoury) accompanied by refreshing cocktails at the Old Port, in Hora. At the end of the month, the much-awaited private club of the JackieO’ family is set to open its doors.

Is there a Mykonos without champagne parties?

Of course, as long as you know where to go. Just 7 km from Hora and protected from the northerly winds, Agrari is a more relaxed and alternative destination. At the end of the road, on the left, you will find Agrari Beach (tel. (+30) 22890-71295). Grab a seat on one of its comfortable loungers on the sandy beach and then, after a day filled with sun and swimming, head to the restaurant. Violetta prepares exceptional traditional dishes (try the imam baildi with xynotyro cheese, and the krommidopita, the traditional local cheese pie with onions and fennel) from organic ingredients sourced from Mykonos and nearby islands.
