Greece’s Central Archaeological Council (KAS) has unanimously approved plans to make the Agios Athanasios archaeological site in northern Ithaca accessible to visitors, paving the way for the creation of an archaeological park amid the island’s characteristic landscape of olive groves, other vegetation and traditional stone terraces.

Located on the eastern slopes of Mount Exoghi, the site, known as the “School of Homer,” was excavated by the University of Ioannina between 1994 and 2012. Archaeologists Thanasis Papadopoulos and Litsa Kontorli-Papadopoulos identified what they described as a large acropolis-like complex dating to prehistoric times.

According to the excavators, habitation began in the Middle Helladic period (1900-1600 BC) and continued through the Mycenaean period (1600-1100 BC). The complex remained in use at least until the Hellenistic period, as evidenced by structures including a tower. During Roman times, the area served as a burial ground.

The updated plans call for the main entrance to be located about 30 meters (98 feet) from a Mycenaean-era fountain. A small guard post and an accessible restroom will also be built, while an existing parking area will be upgraded with a discreet compacted-earth surface.

A natural-earth path will follow the terrain, with a section featuring a gradient suitable for people with disabilities. Two benches and four information signs will also be installed.

The interventions are designed to improve access while preserving the site’s natural character. Further excavations will be needed before the archaeological remains can be fully explored and presented to visitors.
