Lipsi may be small in size, but the low-key Dodecanese island packs a serious punch when it comes to its growing international reputation as one of Greece’s most authentic and sustainable destinations.
The latest recognition comes from the popular Italian travel blog girovagate.com, which has included Lipsi in a newly published list of alternative European destinations recommended for year-round travel. Curated by the co-founder of Italy’s National Association of Travel Bloggers, the list highlights places that offer meaningful, experience-driven travel away from the crowds.
Among heavyweight names such as Lapland, Seville, Tuscany, The Alps and Transylvania, Lipsi was singled out as a leading choice thanks to what the site described as its “authentic Greece” character – unpretentious, high-quality, and deeply connected to nature and local traditions.
The article praised the island’s crystalline waters, quiet beaches, sea excursions, and relaxed pace of life, while also highlighting its gastronomy and the natural beauty of the surrounding islets – there are more than 20 of them – associated with the mythological figure of Calypso, who appears in Odyssey. According to the Italian platform, these experiences are enough to “leave visitors speechless.”
For Lipsi, the distinction is particularly significant given the growing influence of Italian travelers in the Greek tourism market, with visitor numbers increasing year on year. The recognition also reflects a broader strategy by the municipality to promote the island internationally while maintaining a strong focus on sustainability and controlled development, avoiding the pitfalls of overdevelopment seen elsewhere in the Aegean.
That approach has increasingly become part of Lipsi’s identity. Unlike many Greek islands that have embraced large-scale tourism infrastructure, Lipsi has leaned into a slower, simpler model centered on authenticity, walkable villages, traditional tavernas, and protected natural landscapes – especially important as the archipelago serves as a refuge for critically endangered wildlife, including Mediterranean monk seals and loggerhead sea turtles.
The island has recently drawn attention for its campaign promoting “sunbed-free” holidays, encouraging visitors to reconnect with the sea and landscape without the overcrowding and commercialization seen elsewhere in the Mediterranean. Earlier this year, it also gained national recognition as the municipality in Greece with the highest number of officially designated “untouched beaches” – stretches of coastline protected from organized tourist development.
For travelers weary of packed ferry ports, inflated prices, and Instagram-driven island hopping, Lipsi’s growing international profile suggests that quieter, less pretentious corners of the Aegean are increasingly becoming the real luxury.
And while the term “hidden gem” may be overused in travel media, Lipsi still seems determined to do things differently.
