The departure date for your trip is getting closer, and standing between you and your destination is an empty suitcase. Questions immediately begin to fill that space. What should I bring, and what can I leave behind? How much will actually fit? Shouldn’t I save room for souvenirs, too? The answers aren’t always simple – especially when you’re coming to Greece. Famous for its sun-drenched days and cooling evening breezes, the Greek summer often shapes our wardrobe choices on its own. To give you a little extra help, we’ve prepared a guide to what you should pack depending on where you’re heading and you’re planning to do there.
Let’s begin with the essentials. At the very top of every packing list – regardless of destination – is a comfortable pair of shoes, ideally suited for walking. Sneakers and sandals quickly become your best allies, whether you’re exploring an island or wandering through a city. Cobblestone streets, narrow alleyways and archaeological sites all demand comfort and durability. High heels are generally left aside, except for the occasional special invitation or evening event.
Close behind footwear comes the importance of choosing the right fabrics. The sun, high temperatures and long hours outdoors call for lightweight cotton and linen pieces in light shades, allowing the body to breathe and reflecting away much of the sunlight.
No suitcase is complete without a carefully organized toiletry bag and the right accessories. High-protection sunscreen, moisturizers and after-sun skincare products should always grace your bag – as should a good pair of well-fitted sunglasses. Hats, scarves and a practical lightweight backpack, ideal for day-to-night outings, become everyday companions.
With the basics covered, you should adapt the rest of the suitcase contents to your itinerary and the kind of experiences you are planning to have.

Between seaside swims, strolls through villages and long taverna meals, the common denominator is always the sun and the gentle island breezes. Here, simplicity and comfort are the ultimate guides. Swimwear is, of course, essential – but one swimsuit is never enough. We recommend pieces that can easily be styled with shirts or beach cover ups throughout the day, saving you from planning multiple outfit changes. If your itinerary includes spending long hours at the beach – especially since many of the best swimming spots are located far from the main town – it’s worth packing absorbent beach towels and roomy beach bags that can hold all the essentials. You should also take a lightweight water bottle and a power bank. A waterproof pouch and an extra change of clothes are additions you’ll never regret bringing along. And for that part of the day when the sun has set and the tavernas fill up, don’t forget a light jacket or a summer sweater.
Beyond its spectacular beaches and picturesque village alleyways, Greece is also defined by its mountains, its gorges and its beautiful countryside. If you’re planning to explore nature, there are a few essentials you should not overlook. Hiking shoes or boots should join your sneakers in the shoe bag, and a bucket hat should be added to the other headwear you’ve brought. You’ve already got your lightweight backpack, so you’re set there. Do keep in mind that, if you plan on wearing shorts, thorny plants and insects are ever-present hazards. Insect repellent and a small antihistamine kit come in handy. All this preparation may seem overly practical, but trust us; the stunning sights that await you are worth a little bother.

Maps can fool you. Greek cities might initially appear modest in both scale and attractions, yet a single walk is enough to reveal their true depth. You’ll undoubtedly find yourself making your way through museums, archaeological sites and local street markets, or catching a movie at the open-air cinemas, or settling at a café on a lively square. This summer city living –in Athens in particular – calls for casual chic dressing. The dress code is not all that different from that of the islands. The same comfortable shoes, lightweight fabrics and accessories that you’ve already chosen will serve you well. You already have a backpack, but take along a practical crossbody bag, too, one you can use from morning until night. It’s also worth investing in one sharper piece, such as a lightweight summer blazer or a clean-lined top, ideal for more elegant evening outings. If you’re set on seeing any of the many historic churches or monasteries, make sure you’ve packed at least one appropriately modest outfit, out of respect for local feeling.
As your departure date approaches, there’s no need to stress. The “three-shoe rule” – one practical pair (two if you’re hiking), one smarter option and one pair of sandals – is, together with the art of layering, always a reliable packing strategy. What’s more, Greece offers no shortage of stylish discoveries; even if you don’t arrive entirely prepared, you’ll almost certainly find something you love in a local boutique. A pair of handcrafted Greek sandals, a silk scarf from Soufli, or wooden sunglasses designed in Greece can become both a wearable souvenir and a practical solution during your stay. So don’t sweat the packing; enjoy it. It’s almost part of the trip, because when you finally do close the suitcase, your journey has begun.
